Cancer Prevention and Early Detection
Many cancers can be prevented. Contemporary Oncology Team provides information on a person’s risk of developing cancer and risk reduction strategies such as smoking cessation, alcohol restriction, exercise, and healthy eating. In addition, certain types of cancer can be prevented by avoiding exposure to certain infectious organisms (viruses and bacteria) or to environmental carcinogens (e.g. asbestos).
Some cancers can be diagnosed early (when they are still potentially curable) by performing tumors-specific diagnostic tests such as mammograms, Pap smears, colonoscopy , and PSA tests . Finally, families at increased risk for specific cancers due to genetic predisposition should seek genetic counseling on specific risk reduction strategies.
